2013 Sauvignon Blanc – Ready to Pick

Sauv Blanc Nets

For most vineyards the 3rd leaf is the first time you get grapes.  Not so for Joey’s Sauvignon Blanc.  Last year (her second year) we got 35 lbs which resulted in 2 gallons of wine.  In addition, we harvested her grapes the same time as the Pinot Noir on Sept 23rd.

This year I left a little to much fruit on the vines given it does not get as much sun as the Pinot Noir, so it has grown well but is 5 weeks behind in ripening.  However, we have had almost no rain and the days have been warm so it is finally ready to pick!  How do I know?  The birds have started to peck and eat the grapes.

Sunday we will pick, destem and crush the grapes…then on Monday we will rack and introduce yeast…fun, fun, fun!!!

Turtle Vines Sauvignon Blanc – Labels

joey labelsSB labelled

Labels, we have Labels!!! We are gettng very close to finalizing our Turtle Vines labels.  As you can see above, we put them on our newly bottled Sauvignon Blanc.  Vaughn Aldredge is the designer and has done an excellent job on the Logo.  Now I just have to determine if I wanted painted or printed labels on my 2012 Pinot Noir and make sure the labels comply with all the government requirements.

2012 Turtle Vines Sauvignon Blanc

SB Bottling

Sunday we bottled our 2012 Sauvignon Blanc! It is DELICIOUS !!!

If you have been following along, Joey has her vines in the front of the house that were planted in 2011. She gives them much love and they responded by producing fruit the second year, which is quite unusual.

We harvested the crop last fall and made wine. As an experiment we took one gallon and put it through malolactic fermentation and the other we did not.(we ended up with 20 half bottles) The one without malolactic fermentation was a classic Sauvignon Blanc, crisp and full of grapefruit flavor. The second one was smoother and the one Joey prefers, so this is how we will produce her wine this year.

If you get a chance to sample this wine, consider yourself lucky. We are hoping to get enough fruit for 4-5 cases this year, so there will be more to go around.

Bud Break for Joey’s Sauvignon blanc !

P1020157

March 31st our Sauvignon blanc had bud break!

Last year these vines had tremendous growth with only 6-8 buds per vine.  This year we are leaving around 30 buds to try and control the growth and balance the vines.  Our hope is that the shoots will grow to around 4 feet…then stop and ripen the grape clusters, at least that is the goal.

We are on our way to 4 cases of 2013 Turtle Vines Sauvignon Blanc!!!

Front Vineyard

front vineyardAmazing how fast Sauvignon blanc grows in comparison to Pinot noir. Both of the vineyards are on 101-14 root stock (small growth) but the Sauvignon blanc in the front planted last year is growing like crazy. Most of the growth is in shoots, but there are some small grape clusters on each vine, perhaps enough for a little wine but most likely grape jelly. I anticipate next year she will have a bumper crop!

Nonna’s White Wine

front vineyardTwo months ago we planted Sauvignon Blanc in the front yard. They started out as bench grafted root stock and now they are good looking plants! I think they grew faster than the Pinot noir in the back. These in the front will be trained as cordons…..as we think they look prettier in the winter. So…..looks like 2013 will be the first harvest for white wine, with a bottle available early in 2014, about the same time as the Pinot noir!!!

Also note that the front won’t have any weeds due to weed cloth and red bark. I wish I had that in the back……would save me a lot of time!!!

By the way…..Nonna is Italian for Grandmother in case you didn’t know.

Sauvignon Blanc comes to Turtle Vines

sb 7 3 11Yes, you have all been reading about the 3150 Pinot noir vines we have in the back yard. Well, we are adding a little variety to Turtle Vines. We are planting 29 Sauvignon Blanc vines in the front of the house. (29 is Joey’s lucky number and Sauvignon Blanc is her favorite wine.) When they reach maturity, it should give us 4 cases of wine to drink. We have the rebar and location of the plants set. On Tuesday we will plant these and get them off on a good start.

I will baby these this year with a lot of compost and fertilizer to see if I can get them caught up with the Pinor noir in the back. A challenge, but I think we are up to the task. If I can do it, we may even be able to get a few grapes in 2012 !!!
