Ready for Summer Solstice

P1060438We had our annual Summer Solstice party last weekend. It is our family Christmas since it is hard for all of us to get together in December.

I enlisted help from Clint and Linda to tie and cut the vines to 3’ so they start the process of growing trunks and getting set for next years first crop. They were a lot of help and we finished the first 20 rows of the vineyard in a little over an hour. Hopefully I’ll get some more help from Karina on Friday and Saturday!

Hopefully you can see that the vineyard is nicely mowed and weeded. Took a lot of work to get it looking nice for the party.

Pavers and Garden Boxes

paversSome new friends of mine think we are living the “Green Acres” life….City folks starting over on a farm. Little did they know that growing up my brothers and I helped my Dad build garage cabinets, rewire houses, paint, pour concrete and other items I thought was just work. At the time I didn’t think would come in handy later in life.

Well, we decided to redo the outside landscaping in the back of the house. We had hired someone but that didn’t work out so Joanne and I took the project over in April and are almost done with the back. The last two projects were putting in pavers and building garden boxes. Having never done pavers I asked the local place H&M and they told me to put down 3” of compacted stone, 1” of sand and then the pavers. Not so bad, except then you also have to cut the pavers to fit the lawn, steps, curves, etc. So we borrowed a saw from John and Chris Mason and have had it for a few weeks. That was a lifesaver as I have probably cut 200 pieces.

In the picture you can see the garden boxes. Vaughn helped me with the design and some “what to do and not to do” so we have 3 done. To the left of the stairs we are going to add one more garden box as soon as I get the cover crop planted in the vine rows. We put in 4 yards of “Super Soil” from “Grab n Grow” , a local compost place. As you can see by our first crop it is great soil.building boxes planted boxes garden boxes

Taste of Sonoma

taste of sonomaWe spend the Saturday with our friends Bob and Lisa Wise at “Taste of Sonoma”. They had 150 wineries from Sonoma County along with around 50 restaurants in 4 large tents. The event is to raise money for charity. This year it sold out with 2500 people attending. It was an amazing time and it beats driving to all of those wineries!

Wet and Cold Spring

rainbowAbout a month after we planted the first signs of life from the vines arrived. They had to “warm” up with the soil and begin the process of growing. As you can see above, this is a vine with a small bud of grapes and a ladybug. These are very good signs.

Below was one of the most amazing views we have seen….a new vineyard with a rainbow. I think it bodes well for the coming growth of the vines.

The last pictures are some of the other vines just starting to grow.

Last but not least….friends of ours, Don and Lynne Smith, came to visit and picked out their very own vines……if you visit you too can have a vine with your name on it!

And Landscaping?

front demoIn the midst of getting the vineyard ready for planting, we decided to re-landscape the outside of the house. Right now we are tearing out the front porch and replacing it with a different design, installing retaining walls, moving plants, removing most of the grass that was left, adding fences and generally making the place very pretty for our 2nd Annual Summer Solstice Party. I’ve included just a few of the pictures so far from the front of the house. It will be nice when plants start to go in and not just disappear.

More Trips – No work yet!

P1010359February and March was a great time to head out of town and also have friends visit.

Early February we went to Minneapolis to visit Linda and her boyfriend Clint and his daughter Gitzi. We were there 6 wonderful days and got to play in the snow every day. We were lucky that it only got down to 15 degrees most night, which is very warm for there this time of year. They are all coming out for the Solstice and we can’t wait to see them!!!

In March a high school friend of mine, Renata Hanson, came down for a visit. It was the first time in years that we got to spend much time together. It was great to see her and also to have her get to know Joey. Of course we did the requisite wine tasting in Sonoma County! And she taught Joey her Granola recipe.P1010600
Next, we got dressed up and went out to the Oscars at Peter Lowells Restaurant here in Sebastopol. It was great fun and we won a chef coming to our house to prepare us dinner.P1010783
Next, old school friend of Joey’s whom I have gotten to know well also came out from New Jersey to escape the snow and rain. We relaxed at Bodega Head looking for whales, went wine tasting, tried to kill gophers….all that fun. Oh, and they also picked out the Don and Lynn Smith Vines where they will hang a picture of themselves so the vines will grow better! They are looking forward to the first harvest. P1010908

Anniversary Cruise

mexico turtlesSo, all work and no play are not good for the budding viticulturist! June 2010 is our 20th Wedding Anniversary so we decided to take a cruise through the Panama Canal. We started in Miami and went to Jamaica, Columbia, The Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico and ended in San Diego. It was a wonderful 16 day trip!

In the picture above is one of the highlights. We got to release baby Turtles to the wild in Acapulco, Mexico. They were “born” that morning. They are so cute and we hope the two we released will survive and make it back to the beach in 10-15 years.

Harvest Time in Sonoma

IMG_5034What fun we had this weekend. On Sunday we had a little dinner with our neighbors Brian and Anna and some new friends who own small Wineries/Vineyards here in town. John from EMTU and Barbara/Art/Greg and Pat from Graton Ridge. After a nice dinner at our place and a few bottles of wine, we volunteered to help pick grapes. On Monday 9/7 we went to Graton Ridge and spent 3 hours picking the 2009 Pinot noir right next to the winery and tasting room. They had 6 “real” pickers and a few of us volunteers. We harvested 4 tons on 2 acres……not a very good yield and about 1/2 of last year. Next Monday we are going to EMTU for their harvest. He wants us there around 5 am so we can start picking and finish by 11 am before it gets warm. He also said it is incredible to be picking and see the sunrise in the vineyard. I’m going to miss by golf for this, but should be a lot of fun.

Summer diversion – Xavier Visits

xavier mowerAfter our Summer Solstice, our first grandchild Xavier, stayed an extra 2 weeks. He is 6…..so you would think that the two of us could keep him entertained easily, but it took all of our energy to keep up with him. As you can see from the pictures below, he liked whipped cream, much to the consternation of his parents. We also made a trip to a goat farm, enrolled him in swim lessons, visited the library, went to the Humane Society, took tennis lessons with Uncle Dave, studied math every morning, and played with his cousins and our 6 year old neighbor, Grace. We also had a wild chicken visit us for 10 days of his visit.Xavier summer pancake xavier goat
